Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground pork breakfast sausage
  • 1 cup diced yellow onion
  • 1 cup diced green bell pepper
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 6 cups cubed white bread

Instructions:

  1. Brown the ground sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and bell pepper, cooking until the vegetables are translucent and the sausage is mahogany-colored. Drain any excess grease thoroughly.
  2. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Scatter the bread cubes evenly across the bottom. Top with the browned sausage mixture and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until uniform and frothy. Pour the custard evenly over the bread and sausage, pressing down slightly with a spatula to ensure all bread pieces are submerged.
  4. Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate overnight (4–12 hours).
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake covered for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes until the top is golden-brown and the center is set.
